Shih Chien University Professor Tests Positive for COVID-19 |實踐大學兼任師確診 9學生.1老師居家隔離公視 (2020-03-31 00:00)
A Shih Chien University part-time professor has been confirmed to test positive after returning from the U.S. The nine students and one teacher who had contact with him have been in isolation as a result.
At present, only Shih Chien University students, faculty, and staff are allowed on campus, and there is only one entrance to the entire campus open. Those wishing to enter have to scan a QR code to confirm their identities and have their temperatures taken before they are allowed inside. On March 30, the Central Epidemic Command Center announced eight new COVID-19 cases, including a part-time Shih Chien University professor who had returned to Taiwan from the United States on March 2.
His course was a discussion-type course, and he drove his own car to get to the university and held discussions with students inside the classroom. Once the discussions were over, he would leave, so there were only a few places on campus that he had contact with.
This professor only taught one course, and always left after the end of the course. School officials say the professor had come into contact with nine students and one teacher. At present, all are asymptomatic and undergoing home isolation. This news is spreading around the campus, and some students have expressed concerns.
We of course worry that we'll get infected.
We do have fears.
He's not in our department, he just had a few students of what I heard, so I'm not that afraid.
The building housing the classroom used by the professor has been disinfected, and the entire campus will be disinfected once more during the Qingming Festival long weekend. School officials have posted an open letter asking for students and teachers to have confidence in them, but admit that this professor did not inform his department that he had recently returned from the U.S. It is also unclear whether he teaches at any other school.
There are comparatively fewer problems with full-time teachers, and we are fully aware of everything. Some departments know where else part-time teachers teach, but there are always some information gaps.
The university says that before the semester started, it asked all teachers to submit their travel histories. This professor returned to Taiwan on the day the semester started, and did not provide his travel history, creating a disease prevention gap. The university's two campuses employ around 400 part-time professors and another effort will be made to review their recent travel history.
