Tuvalu Next to Sever Diplomatic Ties with Taiwan?|吐瓦魯友台總理下台 我邦交恐有潛在危機公視 (2019-09-19 00:00)
Just days after the Solomon Islands severed diplomatic ties with the ROC, ending a 36-year relationship, reports began circulating that Tuvalu is next. After Enele Supoaga stepped down as Prime Minister, he was succeeded by Kausea Natano. While Sopoaga was pro-Taiwan, Natano's stance on Taiwan is unclear and therefore the future of Tuvalu-ROC relations remain uncertain.
Former Tuvaluan Prime Minister Enele Sopoaga once spoke on behalf of Taiwan at the United Nations. Following the recent legislative elections in Tuvalu, Sopoaga was replaced by Kausea Natano. As Natano's stance on Taiwan is unclear, Reuters has speculated that Taiwan may be in danger of losing yet another diplomatic ally.
Taiwan will pay close attention to future developments. Currently, Taiwan-Tuvalu relations are stable and the new president [prime minister] is interacting closely with our embassy. However, our government will continue to deepen our friendship and cooperative relationship with various parties in Tuvalu.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tuvalu's new premier is keeping in close contact with Taiwan and bilateral relations are stable. The ministry also maintains the friendship and cooperation between the two sides will only deepen in the future. The Tsai administration recently expressed gratitude to 11 of the ROC's diplomatic allies, including Tuvalu, for supporting its bid to join the United Nations.
Immediately after severing diplomatic ties with the ROC, the Solomon Islands established ties with China. Officials from the US Agency for International Development have announced a decision to reassess financial aid to the Solomon Islands in 2020.

And we've had a little bit of a preview of that and its strategic importance, but will any funding be directed to the Solomon Islands, which has just undermined US strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific? We are reassessing our assistance to the Solomon Islands at this point.
US Vice President Mike Pence, meanwhile, has reportedly declined a request from the Solomon Islands prime minister to meet to discuss development partnerships at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly.
