On July 9, Taichung police was tipped off about three suspects who were collecting funds from a scam at a convenience store. The police came to the scene and found several ATM cards and passbooks on them. To the investigators' surprise, the three suspects were all underage, with the youngest being only ten.
Three youths are questioned by police outside a convenience store. The police say the boys were acting suspiciously and a frisk search found several ATM cards and passbooks on them.
They are from the same neighborhood and play together. The scam organization used messaging apps to recruit them.
The youngest boy is only 10 and the oldest just 15. They told police they were recruited into a scam organization by a female classmate surnamed Wu and were told to wait at the convenience store for instructions on when to withdraw funds. They say this is the first time they have done anything like this.
They were arrested their first time out. They didn't really know what they were doing from a legal standpoint.
According to police, the girl surnamed Wu promised the boys a four-way split of NT$10,000 a day at the end of last month. The boys say they didn't know they were doing anything really wrong. One neighbor that knows them all says the children's parents neglect them.
(The parents) are just irresponsible. The kid is only 10. The parents need to parent. You can't just leave the kid with grandma.
The police found NT$1,235, three ATM cards, three passbooks and four phones on the boys. The case has been sent to Taichung's juvenile court and the boys' parents will be held responsible. Police will keep looking for the people running the fraud ring.
